An exhibition and book launch.

Each story is set in the Barmah Forest, which is part of the traditional land of the Yorta Yorta people. These books give young children an insight into Victorian Aboriginal Culture, with Yorta Yorta language being used throughout. Each book is supported by background notes and ideas for related activities.

About the author

Sue Atkinson is a Yorta Yorta woman who has worked across the education sector from kindergarten to Higher education with Indigenous and non Indigenous students for over 30yrs. She gained her PhD in 2009 by research into “Indigenous self determination and early childhood education and care in Victoria” and currently is an Honorary Research fellow at Melbourne University’s Graduate School of Education.
Sue has two adult children, Anthony and Bianca who listened to and made up stories about the ordinary and extraordinary with Sue as they grew up.

About the artist

Annette Sax is a Taungurung woman who has worked in early childhood education for 20 years. She is the Managing Director of Yarn Strong Sista Pty Ltd, an Indigenous education consultancy. YSS consultants provide storytelling, conduct cultural awareness training, and develop culturally appropriate resources. Annette feels blessed to be able to go out on Country where she has been taught her traditions and stories by her Taungurung Elders. She is passionate about passing on the knowledge they have shared with her. Annette and her husband Bob, who is Torres Strait Islander, live in Melbourne with their three children Iluka 12, Mani 9 and Kiella 6.
